School Climate Improvement Plans

Updates to School Climate Policy and Practice (Effective July 2025)

In response to new Connecticut legislation, East Lyme Public Schools has adopted updated policies (5131.9 and 5131.91) to strengthen our districtwide commitment to safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. These new policies replace our former bullying and safe school climate policies, aligning our practices with updated state requirements and a restorative, prevention-focused approach.

Key Updates Include:

  • Formalized School Climate Improvement Plans
Each school develops and implements a school climate plan guided by state standards and school-level data, in collaboration with the school climate committee and school climate specialist.

  • Clear Reporting Process for Challenging Behavior
A new Challenging Behavior Reporting Form is available for students, parents/guardians, and staff to report concerns related to bullying, harassment, or any behavior that disrupts learning or school safety. Reports are assessed and responded to by trained school climate specialists within a specific timeline.

  • Restorative Practices Framework
Schools are now encouraged to use evidence-based restorative practices to address nonviolent conflicts and challenging behaviors. These practices prioritize relationship-building, accountability, and reintegration—helping students repair harm and remain connected to the school community.

  • Tiered Responses to Harm
When student behavior involves physical harm, threats, or major classroom disruption, schools implement a tiered response that may include parent meetings, additional supports, and coordination with special education or 504 teams if applicable.

  • Transparency and Protection
Reporters will receive confirmation and follow-up regarding action steps taken. Student privacy is protected, and retaliation for reporting is strictly prohibited.
