Curriculum

Professional Development

Greetings!

....from Dr. Karen A. Costello, Administrator for Program Improvement

Curriculum is defined in East Lyme as the subject(s) taught and the topics taught within a subject area.  Although the definition of curriculum appears very simplistic, the development and ongoing implementation are far more complex.

Each of the thirteen curriculum areas (depicted in graphic #11-13) in East Lyme is developed by representatives (Grades K-12 teachers and administrators) from the designated subject areas.  The process for development and renewal/revision usually occurs every 3 to 5 years.  The four stage process includes research and development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.  It should be noted that the frequency of the renewal is dependent on the currency of the content, if you will, the rapidity of changes which are happening in a given subject area.

In compliance with Connecticut Educational Statue Sec. 10-16b,  local and regional boards of education are required to attest to the State Board of Education that local programs' infrastructure supports the development of curriculum.

Dr. Jack Reynolds, former East Lyme Superintendent wrote a memorandum (2003) clearly explaining the Relationship and Organization Governing Curriculum, Professional Development and Supervision and Evaluation.
