Seafarer’s Science (Mrs. Nastri’s)
I am so happy you are on the Seafarer Team. I look forward to working with you. In 5th grade science I have three goals (1) to keep all students safe, (2) teach the 5th grade curriculum, and (3) to have fun in science. Our topics this year include: Light and Sound, Earth, Moon & Sun, Our Senses, Optical tools, and Human growth and Development. I hope that it will be an exciting year of learning and discovery for everyone.
Students should come to class prepared with their agenda, a science composition notebook, and a writing tool. Other items that may be useful include packing tape, colored pencils, and post it notes. This class includes many labs and other “hands on” activities that will help you learn science. Everyone should participate to the best of their ability. We will try to finish up our activities during class time, and sometimes you may need to finish things at home. Fooling around is not acceptable. Any student not using time wisely will be asked to sit down. If you don’t understand a topic or activity in class, please come for extra help. Getting help early can prevent major problems later.
ASSESSMENTS: Student grades will be based on tests, projects, lab reports, notebooks, and quizzes. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to passed in late work as soon as possible. It is in your best interest to make up missing work quickly.
NOTEBOOKS: Students must have a notebook dedicated to science. All papers should get attached in this notebook carefully. They should be organized and complete. There will be a table of contents posted in the classroom. The notebook will be checked and graded each trimester.
PROJECTS: Students will be asked complete projects. Some will be worked on in class while other projects will be worked on at home. There will be student choice with each project and there will be a rubric for guidance. These projects will be broken into manageable chunks. Students are requested to keep up with the time line and put their best effort into these projects.
TESTS AND QUIZZES: Some tests and quizzes will be given to check for student understanding. We will work on study skills to help prepare for these.
Homework: Homework assignments will be posted in class, on the school website, and on remind.com. Homework should be done with care and turned in on time.
With Positive Behavior Supports in School, Students are expected to RESPECT: self, others, and the environment. We will be using Viking vouchers to reward students for showing respect. If a student disrupts the learning process we will have a behavior conference and talk about the behavior that needs to change.
Well this year is off and running. I hope that when your students leave my class, they are more knowledgeable and enthusiastic about science.
