and join NCS for a Family Beach Party and Bonfire
to be held at "Hole in the Wall" on September 12, 2010.

How do I get invited to the NCS Family Beach Party?

Step One:

Read, read, and read.  Free choice.  With so many great books out there, summer is the time for you to choose books that are interesting and fun.  Read books that interest you. Tuck a book in your pocket, in your backpack, or bring a stack for those long car rides. Enjoy books everywhere you go this summer. Reading every day is important!

If you want suggestions, click the book above to download the complete 26 page East Lyme Schools 2010 Grade K-8 Summer Reading list.  The NCS School Office also has paper copies available.

Step Two:

Complete the NCS Book Review forms and return them to your Fall 2010 teacher before Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

If you are entering Grade 1, fill out 2 book reviews.  (Grade 1 form)
If you are entering Grade 2, fill out 3 book reviews. (Grade 2 form)
If you are entering Grade 3 and 4, fill out 4 book reviews. (grade 3/4 form)

Where can I find the books?

For the fifth year, the Niantic Center School Library offered parents the opportunity to check out bags of books for the summer break.  Over 20% of our students took advantage of that opportunity to enjoy our books on an extended loan. We ask that the books be returned in early September so they will be available for teacher and student use.

Note to Parents from Joan Schneider, Library Information Specialist

One of the best gifts we can give our children is the gift of reading.  I know how schedules can be hectic, but I ask you to make time for reading every day during the summer. Over and over studies have shown that children who read become better readers.  Likewise, children who don't read during the summer suffer a slide in academic skills.  One study even went on to suggest that children should read at least 6 books to avoid the summer learning slide.  Reading is a skill for life, and practice is the key.  However, reading should not be considered a chore.  To motivate children to read, please let them choose what they want to read.  Find out what interests them, and help them find books related to those interests.  Let them read for fun!
