Welcome to East Lyme Schools

What makes East Lyme Schools unique, what sets us apart, is our commitment to care for each child. We continually develop programs and courses that address the requirements of various tests and standards. We employ the best educational research and instructional technique to meet our goals. Underlying all we do is a sincere desire to nurture each child and provide the best experience our community can.

Welcome from Superintendent, James Lombardo, Ph.D.

August 2010

Dear Parents and East Lyme and Salem Community Members:

I am thrilled to join the East Lyme Public Schools’ teaching and learning team.

As your new Superintendent of Schools, I am honored to join one of the most outstanding school districts in the country, a label that certainly contributes greatly to East Lyme’s recent designation by Newsweek magazine as one of the top 75 communities in the country in which to live and work.  I pledge to do my best to help the East Lyme schools continue to provide the very best educational experience for our students and their families.

As a brief introduction, I have served as a teacher and administrator for the past 37 years in Vermont and Pennsylvania.  For 24 of those years, I have been the Superintendent of Schools in four school districts, including schools in rural Vermont and suburban Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.  I also have taught graduate classes at the University of Vermont and led teams of educators to China as a facilitator with the Asian Studies program at UVM.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English from Middlebury College and my Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Vermont.  I also learned much from travel in more than fifty countries on six continents.

On a personal level, I was born and raised in Waterbury, CT, where my parents still reside in my father’s birth home.  I have two daughters: Mia, 26, is a Peace Corps volunteer in Swaziland; Merissa, 28, is a filmmaker and artist in Pittsburgh.  Judith and I now reside in beautiful Niantic.

I look forward to meeting and working with our teachers, staff, and community members to make East Lyme schools even better than they already are.

Sincerely,

James D. Lombardo, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
